We delve into the possibilities of a Season 2 for the Apple TV+ series City on Fire, exploring whether it will be renewed or canceled.
Created by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage (known for Gossip Girl), City on Fire is a crime drama series that has taken a leaf from Garth Risk Hallberg’s book of the same title. The protagonist, Samantha Yeung, is portrayed by Chase Sui Wonders and is a teenager who is mysteriously shot in Central Park on the Fourth of July in 2003.
Although Samantha survives the shooting, she is left comatose and her life hangs in the balance. As the plot unravels, it is revealed that Samantha’s life intertwines with a series of arson attacks in New York City, a cult-followed rock band, and a wealthy real estate family residing uptown.
The star-studded cast features Jemima Kirke (known from Girls) as part of the affluent family, Ashley Zukerman (from Succession) as her spouse Keith, and Nico Tortorella in the role of William, a tormented artist. Additionally, Wyatt Oleff (Guardians of the Galaxy) plays Charlie, one of Samantha’s closest friends, and John Cameron Mitchell (The Sandman) stars as the enigmatic Amory Gould.
Despite the fascinating narrative and high-profile cast, the series has not managed to win over critics or climb up the charts. In light of this, one might wonder if there’s any chance for a second season of City on Fire.
Will Apple TV+ Renew City on Fire for Season 2?
July 8th, 2023
As of now, there is no official announcement regarding the fate of City on Fire’s second season. The prospect of hearing news on this front seems bleak.
Given that the series is adapted from a novel which has no sequel in sight, the likelihood of a follow-up series seems quite low. It appears that City on Fire will remain a limited series on Apple TV+.
June 8th, 2023
As of this date, Apple TV+ has not confirmed whether City on Fire will be given a chance for a second run or if it’s curtains for the crime drama series. Although the show’s ratings aren’t promising, it’s worth exploring the factors influencing its potential renewal.
The series has been largely panned by critics, holding a disappointing 36% rotten score on Rotten Tomatoes (as of June 8th, 2023), with criticisms directed at underdeveloped characters and convoluted plot twists. It fares slightly better on IMDB with a rating of 6.0/10, but this is still less than satisfactory.
Regarding its popularity, the series hasn’t made a significant impact online and currently ranks a mediocre 18th on Apple TV+’s own charts, even as new episodes continue to roll out weekly. The show doesn’t appear to have a sizeable fan base either.
Despite these grim factors, it’s important to remember that the ultimate decision lies with the streaming platform. That said, it seems quite apparent that City on Fire may not get the green light for a second season due to its lackluster performance with critics and audiences alike.
We promise to keep you updated on any future developments regarding the potential renewal of City on Fire.
