Jessica Chastain was nominated for her first Oscar for her supporting role in The Help in 2011. She is now ready to play the role that made her a household name.
The Help was a big hit at the box office. It was based on a book by Kathryn Stockett about a white journalist and two black maids in Jackson, Mississippi in 1963, and it was based on a $25 million budget. Chastain played Celia Foote, a bubbly housewife whose friendship with her maid, Minny Jackson, helped her deal with the stress of losing a pregnancy and getting married. Spencer played Minny Jackson.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly’s podcast The Awardist, Chastain talked about her idea for a sequel in which she and Spencer’s characters would come back.
“Celia and Minny, I just want to do something and see what happens,” Chastain said. “You know that they ended up living together and raising the baby together because they were best friends. What a great movie that would be! I loved her, and I got a little crazy over her.”
Tate Taylor directed the movie, which helped Emma Stone, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Viola Davis get more attention. Davis was also nominated for an Oscar for her lead role as Aibileen Clark.
Davis, on the other hand, has since said that the movie didn’t show enough about race. She told The New York Times in 2018 that she was sorry she was in the movie. Even though she liked the actors and crew, she said that the film didn’t really put the maids’ voices at the center.
“I just thought that, at the end of the day, the maids’ voices weren’t heard,” she said. “And I know that if you make a movie where the whole point is, “I want to know what it feels like to work for white people and raise children in 1963,” I want to hear how you really feel about it. I didn’t hear that at all during the movie.”
